IPSS: International Prostate Symptom Score

The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) is an eight-question screening tool developed to assess the severity of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It includes seven questions about urinary symptoms (e.g., frequency, urgency, weak stream) and one question on quality of life.

The total score ranges from 0 to 35, with severity classified as mild (0-7), moderate (8-19) and severe (20-35)

The international Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) is divided into two subscores:

the voiding subscore (IPSS-V)

and

the storage subscore (IPSS-S)

These subscores categorize the seven symptom-related questions into two groups based on the nature of the symptoms.

Incomplete emptying: Over the past month, how often have you had a sensation of not emptying your bladder completely after you finished urinating?
Frequency: How often do you urinate again less than two hours after finishing urination?
Intermittency: How often do you stop and start again several times when urinating?
Urgency: How often do you find it difficult to postpone urination?
Weak Stream: How often do you experience a weak urinary stream?
Straining: How often do you need to push or strain to begin urination?
Nocturia: How many times do you typically get up at night to urinate?
